Schools and the sale, supply and consumption of alcohol

How should schools handle the legal and ethical issues surrounding the use of alcohol within the school environment?

Creating an alcohol policy allows a board of trustees, staff, parents and students to be clear on what is acceptable within their school.

Consideration should be given to what is acceptable:

  • On school grounds

  • At school events

  • At staff events

  • Around students

  • When an outside group is using school grounds.

  • Regarding fundraising and sponsorship

  • Regarding gifts, prizes and raffles

  • What the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 allows.
